"One important finding in this [Cochrane] review was that regardless of the
treatment used, for most women, nipple pain reduced to mild levels
approximately seven to 10 days' after giving birth (postpartum). "

That is the info I received prior to giving birth to my first child in
1975, and it was true. What I was not told was that my nipples would be
sore and bleeding in those first days, something that could have been
avoided had we known then about nursing with our babies absolutely flat
against our own bodies, tummy to tummy. And, of course, there are are other
reasons why nursing might be painful, almost all of which can be assessed
and/or resolved during an IBCLC visit.
In my case I was holding the baby so that he was face upwards, and he was
not able to turn his head to one side to nurse because of torticollis
caused by a difficult birth. When this was fixed it no longer hurt, but he
continued to have a tight mouth. Those were the days before most of us knew
how cranio sacral therapy could help, and IBCLCs were not even on the
horizon. What a long way we have come!
