Excellent post, Jennifer. There is exciting scientific research being published every day and I believe mainstream medicine is at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how important our microbiome really is...(something Ayurvedic Medicine has known for at least 6000 years) and yes, healthy guts are not just about popping a few non-specific probiotic capsules...
