For those like me who are not health care professionals, and newly studying - folic acid is the synthetic version of folate - a B group vitamin. A folate deficiency is linked to neural tube defects (spina bifida), and thought to be also linked to cleft lip and palate, and other midline defects.
A high intake of folate (which is more likely to happen with folic acid supplements) can mask a B12 deficiency and folate requires B12 in order to function, so that might be a clue Nikki?
