I have a mother whose case I am familiar with through LLL Leaders and
two, now three of her babies. All have had terrible weight gain problems
despite an apparently adequate supply and didn't gain well until
establishing on solids, around 9 mos (mom nursed each 1 yr) I have never
seen her, so I don't
know for sure that these facts are accurate, but we are scheduling an
appointment and there is a good chance that we may want to test her milk
to see if the fat content is in the normal range.
Two questions: 1) best way to assess? I am assuming that if we pump one
breast entirely and mix the milk, that this would be the closest to a
"fair" sampling. Not sure if time of day should be considered as well.
2) What lab would do this, and does it need to be done through an MD, I
suppose? Suggestions on following this up? Any pitfalls that I should be
aware of?
I would appreciate any input on this.
TIA,
Lisa
