The Cochrane reviews use only randomized controlled trials in their
analysis of issues. This type of primary research is not always what we see
when articles about breast pumps and pumping are published in our journals.
Many of the articles we read do not fit the criteria that the Cochrane
reviews use in their systematic analysis. Therefore their conclusion may be
different from what we see in clinical practice. Using a Cochrame review to
deny mothers access to breast pumps offers a sad way to weasel out of
fulfilling clinical obligations to patients.
