I am in rural southeastern Vermont at a small community hospital. We offer
a New Moms Network group every Wednesday morning. Our community LOVES
education and "I am not one of those people that needs a Support Group".
I have a rotating group of local experts who come in and do short
presentations on their specialities. I just did the next quarter's
schedule, which includes Starting Solids (with the Early Ed RD), Lead Safe
Homes (VT program), Teeth: Getting Them and Keeping Them (Dept of Health
hygienist), Baby Massage (Intro 20 minutes), Mom-Baby Yoga (instructor
gives out a brochure for her class), Intro to Winter Baby Wearing. We will
also have a holiday party, and yesterday we discussed holiday traditions
and the challenges of figuring out what family means.
Doors open at 930, speaker at 10.

We always talk about breastfeeding somehow. Moms who are bottlefeeding are
usually doing it because the breastfeeding was a disaster....also have moms
supporting each other with nipple shields.

And - I find it pretty easy to say, "Hmmm, I think you probably need
someone to focus in on you and your baby. If you haven't figured it out
already with all this support, you need expert help."
Then I help them figure out where to get it.

And local agencies feel like the hospital is supporting their work. We
trust each other more, and refer more easily.
