The answer to this question is to test for bacteria count. Great research project for someone in a master's project perhaps?

Subject: medela waterless milk warmer

Hello all. Is anyone using the Medela Waterless Milk Warmer in their NICU? If so what are your guidelines for saving milk after it is warmed? Our unit purchased one warmer for every bedspace in the NICU.

So what has been happening is that the nurse warms milk for a feeding and then mom shows up to breastfeed. Mom then bottlefeeds because she doesn't want her milk thrown away. I called Medela and verbally they said that the milk can be saved because it isn't heated to a very high temperature (this is milk from a bottle that has never had a nipple on it where the baby took a partial feeding). This information is not in writing on their site or with the instructions for the warmer. A neighboring hospital purchased the warmers and the representative told the LCs in that facility that once the milk is warmed it has to be consumed or disposed. It can not go back in the refrigerator. So this has become a problem with wasted milk. Does anyone have any information about this?

Thank you.
