Hi Debra,
My apologies for prematurely hitting “send” on my last email!

Regarding your reply to my initial message, WOW, your feedback could serve as an excellent teaching tool for pumping, especially regarding important issues that are typically only learned via trial and error. THANK YOU!!

My concern with pumping is that:
1. It has the potential to cause injury and should be more closely monitored.
2. It’s a task that often gets low priority on the staff’s task list and tends to be pushed off
until Lactation sees the mother, wasting valuable time and potentially delaying Lactogenesis 2.
3. Unless it is viewed as a task that must be documented in the electronic medical record, accountability will remain low.

My thought is that an order for pumping, for example, “PRN, if indicated, ie. maternal-infant separation, ineffective breastfeeding, etc..,” would appear as part of the standard postpartum order set and thereby require completion. I guess I just don’t understand how such an important process, with multiple potential risks for injury, is not more closely monitored and supported. Make sense?

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and wisdom.
Take care,
Amy😄
