Hi Barbara,
I think it depends on the age of the infant. IF the infant is under 6 months, I would not introduce solids early as a substitute for breastmilk. IF the infant is over 6 mo and milk supply is a little low, starting meats and other highly nutritive solids early on would definitely be reasonable. I would suggest following the infant's weight closely, and of course the infant's feeding cues.
I am not sure everyone knows re rice- rice has arsenic, and it has been recommended that infants have no more than 2 servings of rice a week, no matter if it is organic/brown/white. Rice likes to preferentially take up arsenic that is in the soil. Basmati from India appears to have the least arsenic according to Consumer Reports.
Best,
Anne

Dear Anne,
I agree with what you are saying. I am wondering if you feel there might be wiggle room depending on two factors.
1. How low is the mother's breastmilk supply? What if the baby only needs a 2-5 extra oz per 24 hours to grow well? Could the family then add a bit of extra healthy solids (see below) to make up the difference or are you always in favor of donor milk (Yes!) or some formula instead of solids?
2. What about the kinds of solids? Cereal and apple sauce are not the answer but what about avocados? Or some ground up brown rice with some ground turkey and a little olive or coconut oil?
If you focus on the fats and proteins and only need a little, do you feel this could work?
I respect your opinion very much so want to make sure I am suggesting what is best for families.
Thank you!
