Dear Lactnet Friends:

Yesterday, I heard from some community workers how local mothers are
putting rum into baby's bottles, so their babies will sleep. (In England in
the 1800s, it was gin.)

When I thought about it, it hit me that breastfeeding mothers are told to
pump and dump (still, although there is NO evidence for the practice)
because of concern about a molecule of alcohol in their milk. Meanwhile
babies have been ingesting alcohol for centuries. Only case reports of
dangerous alcohol to babies are methyl alcohol, and inhalation isopropyl
alcohol. In 1982 a case report of 7 infants intentionally poisoned with
ethyl alcohol was published. Maybe there was one in the news in the past 5
years.

This disconnect between what is believed and what is makes me angry and sad.

Mothers, have a drink and keep breastfeeding. If you can drive a car
without getting busted for DUI, you are way safe to breastfeed. If you are
drunk, it's your parenting and the safety of your baby that is at risk,
especially when bedsharing, NOT breast milk.

sigh...

warmly,
