Freeze drying breastmilk has the potential to extend the shelf life of the
milk and help with storage room constraints but can change some of the
components of breastmilk. It has been shown to reduce beneficial bacterial
counts and reduce vitamin C concentration. Vitamin C can be further reduced
when exposed to light and when fed to infants with certain bottle systems.
Changing the microbiome of breastmilk and reducing certain components in
expressed breastmilk could have the potential of delivering breastmilk that
has been sufficiently altered to place some infants in a situation of
reduced immune protection.
