Pat,

I so agree with you about the need for everyone on staff in a 
baby-friendly hospital to have received the training.  When I used to 
do BFHI facillitating and assessing in Harare, Zimbabwe, this did 
happen and we knew that the input of the cleaners was particularly 
valuable....

In the little poly-clinics where the uncomplicated deliveries took 
place, everyone was trained - from the guard at the gate to the 
cleaners to the ward sisters to the matron.  I remember one 
assessment where the security guard did not make it into the random 
sampling.  He was crushed.  So the leader of the assessment team 
rushed around and found another set of forms so that he could be 
included.  There were no breast pumps ever.  But in accordance with 
good BFHI practice every staff member - even the men - could 
demonstrate hand expression by clutching at their chests and showing 
us how they taught the mothers.  The guard was asked why he wanted to 
undergo the assessment and he said, "In case mothers want to talk to 
me about breastfeeding  while they are waiting at the 
gate...."   Don't you love it?  Breastfeeding was so 
valued.  Education was so valued.  So the BFHI was seen as something 
fantastic - which it was, of course!
