What a sad state of affairs. You could of course bring this to the
attention of your Ethics Committee, Risk Management Committee, and
Corporate Compliance Department. If this neonatologist starts instituting
formula friendly policies to the detriment of breastfeeding and human milk
you can contact your Quality Improvement Department to study his
recommendations. I spoke at a hospital sponsored conference and worked with
a particular hospital as a consultant with a very similar situation as you
describe. It got so bad that I recommended that the lactation consultants
and nurses fill out a conscientious objection form to some of the policies
a particular physician was trying to institute. When something like this
threatens the health of the patient, our duty is clearly to the patient.
