Dear Friends,
I am sorry but just catching up with my reading of lactnet!
I have worked with several mothers with a history of breast surgery.
Those who suggested vasospasms in the past are very much on track with
my experience.
Here is what I have been suggesting for possible vasospasms:
1. Consider the possibility of you having vasospasms
i.http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/nipple-blanching/
ii.http://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content.php?pagename=doc-V-RP
1.Consider:
a.Avoiding cold, caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine
b.Consider Ibuprofen
c.Wool nursing pads
d.Covering your nipples and breasts immediately after taking the baby off
e.Dry warmth on breasts right after feeding and between feeds.
f.B-6 and magnesium to help with circulation
g.L-arginine 500mg 3 x per day usually resolves pain within 24 -48 hours.
h.Nifedipine- Suggested dosage: 30-60 mg/day of sustained-release
formulation (Hale, 2008)
The L-arginine is a new idea to me but my moms are saying it helps
tremendously. Also, the wool nursing pads really help too! I am not sure
why but my moms say that they make a huge difference. I know warmth is
good, but why wool?
The other thing I would have her consider is acupuncture to help with
her nerve functioning. It has helped a few of my mothers who had surgery.
Good luck!
