Sonya’s suggestion that hand expression be taught during early labor makes sense on a number of levels. As a childbirth educator and labor nurse, I have advocated the use of nipple stimulation to facilitating labor progress through the release of oxytocin, thereby stimulating contractions. Teaching hand expression instead, removes some of the “awkwardness” with the acquisition of a useful skill.
What a great way to implement this! Thank you, Sonya. I will be passing this nugget on to the labor nurses I know!
