Good that Pamela added baby's health into the discussion. Consider
inserting *lifestyle choice* in place of "emotional well-being."
To clarify: for the purpose of providing a remedy as in the case of an
actual mental health medical condition, an alternate feeding method, and/or
product such as donor milk whenever available, may certainly be the
appropriate and necessary plan of care regarding feeding the baby.
Most often though, formula feeding is chosen, decided upon, or switched to,
due to the mother's priority of an emotional and/or physical preference
for a feeding method that she deems most congruent with her preferred
lifestyle. The priority is not the baby's nutritional well-being and health.
As you know, the AAP included in their heavily evidence based 2012 policy
statement on Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk: "Thus, infant
feeding should not be considered as a lifestyle choice but rather as a basic
health issue. As such, the pediatrician’s role in advocating and supporting
proper breastfeeding practices is essential and vital for the achievement of
this preferred public health goal."

Now, how to get moms who are planning to formula feed to eagerly consider
the baby's health a priority, over and above their image and expectation
of their preferred non-breastfeeding lifestyle....?
