Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for taking the time for such a long answer. I am glad to see that
we agree on so many things. Standardized, manufactured probiotics don´t
appear to be a good solution.
I am sorry if you understood that I give no importance to the overuse of
antibiotics. My email was mainly about probiotics so I did not address
that. Antibiotics are a whole other huge difficulty, obviously. As you
mentioned, the antibiotic issue is also a big problem in Spain (but, hey,
for the record, we might be bad about overuse of some meds, but this is A
GREAT, BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY!! Come visit!!). I see many mothers who are given
amoxicillin (!!!) or ciprofloxacin (!!!) for mastitis, and of course no one
has told them that draining the breast effectively will cure them. In
Spain, antibiotics require medical prescription, but for many many years
pharmacies have dished them out over-the-counter (and I know many tourists
would actually buy antibiotics here to take them home to their countries).
So dysbiosis is not our greatest problem… resistant bacteria are.
Fortunately for the last few years and after a great battle on our part,
antibiotic prescription has become more rational and their dispensation
very strict. Definitely, targeted, rational use of antibiotics is
absolutely mandatory. They do save lives.
I am not an expert on gut flora, on microbiome or on holistic medicine.
Just a traditional family doc IBCLC homeschooler mom trying to do her best
and keep up with new things. I don’t have time to become an expert on
everything, much as I´d love to. You say providers need to become adept at
using probiotics, and it all sounds so wonderful, so perfect... but the
thing is the only probiotics I can find here are standardized, manufactured
ones, one strain fits all, and the only recommendations are made by the
industry.
So as for the use of probiotics in the lactation field, I am scared by the
disasters I am seeing and I would like to read some solid evidence, by
independent researchers, before I use them. If you know of any research
with these characteristics (independent, lactation field), I would love to
read it!
Thanks again,
Kika
