I'm recently working on that topic and I was looking for info on the web, and I found this book: http://www.jblearning.com/catalog/9780763780524/preview/ 

Basically it states that there are certain periods of growth spurts that the mother can anticipate, of course, is not a rule, but I think the info is useful when you're trying to communicate with the mother.
