Thinking outside the box. Could amniotic fluid be harvested somehow at birth? Is there an iv fluid close to that? D5w ? Lactated ringers? Would it be harmful to use said iv fluid, for example, with a dropper at breast, a few mls ?"

I have often wondered whether amniotic fluid would be beneficial as a supplement, especially for the very premature babies. As they are often born surgically, perhaps some of the fluid could be suctioned into syringes to feed to them before even colostrum. They digest it prenatally, so it would seem to follow that they could digest it postnatally. Perhaps someone who works with preemies will do this study.
I did find this study on Google Scholar, but it's an experiment done on mice: http://www.pnas.org/content/109/28/11330.fullOh, now this is interesting. Gatorade for preemies! Basically formula patterns after amniotic fluid rather than human milk: http://www.webmd.com/parenting/baby/news/20021115/gatorade-for-preemies
