Hi Molly,
I think this mother should be referred to a breast specialist, breast
surgeon, or general surgeon who deals with breast problems. I think the
mother may need an ultrasound or mammogram perhaps. The mother may need the
lump aspirated, drained, or biopsied. The mother may need antibiotic
treatment.
When I do my bf teaching I tell moms a bit about breast care and what is in
their little book that we give out (engorgement, plugs, mastitis). I tell
them that if the problem does not resolve in 1 to 2 days or is getting
worse and not better with simple instructions from me or the book, then
they are to see their physician.
Breast cancer, even, would be a possibility.
