Thank you Pat for posting a link to Nancy Mohrbacher's excellent summary of High Lipase activity in expressed milk. I was pleased to note that Nancy included the option of donating the previously stored, unusable milk, to a milk bank. I wanted to confirm that Milk Banks can accept this milk. Each batch of donor milk is processed using milk from 3-4 donors, thereby diluting the soapy smell and taste. In addition, much of the milk used by premature and ill babies may be administered via NG tube, so the off-taste or smell is not of concern.
When a potential donor calls to donate milk which her own baby won't accept due to the high lipase activity, it is noted in her file. This prevents using milk from more than one "high lipase" donor in the same batch. Just to note, once a mother has scalded her milk, it can't be used for donation.
