Update, most things are going really well, the 3 year old has adapted her feeding to mum's availability and has settled 2 nights in a row at home with dad or grandparents. She happily feeds in hospital and has shared mum's lap with baby, watched whilst baby has fed and the finished off herself. Baby is taking 2-3 full breast feeds in 24 hours-remainder given as EBM at the breast by NG tube.
Mum is meeting all EBM needs with expressing but hardly expresses anything with a pump, virtually everything is hand expressed and I explained that is fine-she is meeting both her children's needs and a pump is not compulsory. Letting down to metal and plastic is very differnt to a warm, vital snuggly baby or an engaged enthusiastic nursing toddler.
This mum is doing everything by instinct and actually needed very little input from staff. We are pleased to be able to support her and it is a great education opportunity for all of us! We are so fortunate to be able to offer a room and services so close to baby for as long as she needs.
Sue
