calculating intake based on observation."
Actually, this has been studied. No one could correctly calculate intake
based on observation. I think one study was by Kirsten Hedberg-Nyqvist but
don't quote me. In it, experienced and skilled observers watch a video of a
baby nursing. No one could estimate how much baby had ingested.
The great fakers are babies that take in nothing at breast while looking
great. Other babies can take in 3-5 ounces in just a few minutes. We've
heard of babies who looked awful at breast and still took in a sufficient
amount.
Scales have their value. when used wisely.
