With mother's permission TF would like to know if anyone has any ideas what is wrong.
Baby is 8 months old nursing 4 times a day and takes solids twice a day - baby is happy and healthy
Mom is having breast pain - it is only in the right breast - started about 6 weeks ago
The pain is NOT at let down
The pain starts about 5 minutes after the baby is done nursing and last up to 2 hours.
The pain is present only if the baby nurses on that side
The pain is shock like - like stabbing knife all around the breast - it is not burning is not throbbing
She rates the pain as an 8 out of 10 that begain to subside after 1 1/2 hours but is still there for about 2 hours
She has never had a fever - no localized pain
Her breasts are soft and have been the entire time - no lumps or bumps
Her nipples are intact - not red - no nipple pain at all - all the pain is in the right breast
The is a small quater size area at 1:00 on the outer areola that was puffy when this started
Mom describes a buldge like on a balloon - it lasted about 2 days - the is nothing there now
When the pain was first diagnosed she was given 10 days of Diflucan
When the pain did not get better after 5 days the dose was increased - after 10 days she stopped - it was not helping
2 days later she was started on antibiotics - 10 day course of Cephalexin - no chage in the pain
She has tried heating pads - 20 minutes before and for 1/2 hour after - no difference
She tried ice - no difference
She can't wear a bra - it makes the pain worse
She can bind her entire chest with an ace wrap- she did it over the weekend so she could have Easter
It decreased the pain from an 8 to a 6 put was still present
There is no change with cold - no change in nipple or breast color
She is now trying Lecithin, calicium, mag.
She takes Motrin 800 mg 3 times a day and can't tell any difference
She took Lortab on Sunday and rated the pain a 4-5.
What next?
She is worried that she has breast cancer - I told her she could ask for an US of the breast but the symptoms did not sound like cancer
As a last result she could nurse only on the left and wean from the right - the problem is that the baby won't take a bottle or drink from any type of cup - we tried
She wants to know what is wrong and not just quit nursing so that the pain will go away
Any ideas?
