Hi
Mum has baby born at 34 weeks-now 2 days old and 3 year old still nursing.
Hospital neonatal unit have no problems with her feeding both but we all were wondering what best management practice would be.
Priority to feeding/expressing for baby would be my guess with toddler feeding after baby's needs have been met.
Most 3 year olds would cope with some reduced access -this mum can have open unlimited access to her baby and will be provided with hospital accomodation and food etc just yards away from baby and access to electric hospital grade double pump on demand until baby is ready for discharge-possibly 4-6 weeks.
I will be talking to her later today and will suggest she either feeds baby if baby able and pump to keep at least a couple of feeds ahead in case baby has a sleepy episode and has a tube feed of breast milk. The extra demands of feeding and or pumping for the baby should push up her supply to meet the needs of both.
Any other thoughts?
