I am surprised that anyone is still making recommendations based on the outdated concept that "breastmilk is all used up". We know that fiber in breastmilk is present for numerous reasons, both soluble and insoluble (not digestible) fiber, so there will always be waste (in addition to the waste that is a byproduct of metabolism). That is a baby is happy, growing and appears to be "just fine" are not evidence that the gut is healthy. I have worked with hundreds and hundreds of babies with varying degrees of gut dysfunction. A common theme is infrequent stooling, wherein the mother knows it is not normal while her ped and IBCLC are undermining her intuition by referring to common as normal. While it is true that you need to know what you are looking for to the connect the dots, but they do connect, so that a thorough history will usually reveal the cause of infrequent stooling along with the solution (such as structural issues, food intolerances, abx exposure or other causes of gut damage or nutrient deficiencies such as mag), but stooling can almost always be normalized to several per day with adequate healing and support.
