Jeanette, and anyone else who is asked for 'proof' that baby-friendly
practice is supported by research evidence, go to the Baby-Friendly UK
website and download the publication with details of all the evidence for
all the steps. There is a whole chapter on the first hour of life.
No one can 'prove' that skin to skin, or breastfeeding, are best. Anyone
who wants to interfere with the physiological norm needs to be asked to
show that such interference is not harmful. Even proving that one plus one
equals two is not at all straightforward.
The Cochrane review of skin to skin immediately after birth found that it
has NO known harmful effects. Ask them to show you one other thing that is
true about.
