Hi All,
As a WIC IBCLC I do 'volunteer' breastfeeding classes at our local Babies R
Us. The marketing manager has been very respectful of my professional Code
of Ethics (even looking them up and reading them herself!). When I first
began doing this I did have to remind her not to bring over products to
show during the class, and she no longer does that at all.

I don't do this to 'market' WIC however. I do this to reach parents where
they are at with current and appropriate information free of product
marketing (despite the location!). I do see parents from the class
checking out with baby 'stuff' but I don't see them over in the pump/bottle
area. That includes the parents attending my Working and Breastfeeding
class.

I admit to being skeptical when approached and remain cautious regarding my
professional ethics. One very positive outcome is that the regional
marketing manager I work with has posted the Breastfeeding Friendly
stickers in every store window in her district. She did this on her own as
she was concerned corporate would not permit (better to ask forgiveness
that ask permission????) Hope sharing this doesn't get back to corporate
and get her in trouble.

At any rate it has been a very positive experience for me as an IBCLC and I
feel it gives parents the opportunity to hear from someone not pushing some
product or class or service.
Michele
