Dear Lactnet Friends:
Humility and sensitivity in communication is a never-ending learning
process.
A woman I know saw a nurse practitioner to discuss having an IUD inserted.
The nurse practitioner told her to take ibuprofen after the procedure, and
lots of it. My friend replied that she never took ibuprofen. The nurse
practitioner's reaction was insensitive and close-minded, "What?? Do you
want to suffer?"
How much better it would have been if my friend had been asked, "What do
you use for pain?" Then there would have been a conversation.
warmly,
