Yes, of course it does. It's work. So is breathing, keeping your heart
beating, keeping your brain running! The important thing is for the
baby's milk intake to be sufficient to run the body, fuel normal
activity AND allow growth and development.
So when we are working with babies who are not growing well, we want to
minimize calorie wastage, increase calorie intake, and consider the
possibility of failure to metabolize the calories they are taking in
(illness such as UTI, malabsorption secondary to allergy, metabolic
disorders).
