Debra shares the truly tragic story of a two-month premie, now six weeks of
age, discharged home two weeks ago. By my math, this baby is still only 38
weeks AGA. Baby is brought to bed to BF, Mom falls asleep, baby dies. The
blurb she shared doesn't tell us any other details about how and why the
baby died. Rollover/suffocation? True SIDS (we won't know *that* unless
there is an autopsy)? Mom obese or impaired or a smoker? What kind of
bedding? And why the heck is this baby on a three-hour feeding schedule, at
home?

I recently posted on my Facebook biz page: "When Susan Ludington-Hoe talks,
I listen. BFg advocates love skin-to-skin, and need to be aware of a
newly-emerging complication. Ever heard of "Sudden Unexpected Postnatal
Collapse?" It's as scary as it sounds. This excellent article offers
guidance for HCPs (primarily nurses) who are with a new family after birth,
to assess for signs and risks in the early post-delivery period. Good news:
Teaching staff and families how to safely position a baby in s2s is pretty
easy; the article shows a simple poster/index card to teach parents, and
cites (at FN 57) a free webinar for staff.

Ludington-Hoe's article goes to the time period shortly after birth, and is
bout full term healthy babies. I wonder if a baby like this, born really
quite early, and not yet even to the original birth date, wasn't also
especially vulnerable.

P l e a s e understand that I am a huge proponent and former devoted
practitioner of co-sleeping and night nursing. By "blaming the sleeping"
and turning our heads, we lose opportunities to learn better ways to teach
safe night parenting.
