According to the Medical University of South Carolina, a test may be done on cord blood at birth. Because the baby has a high probability of having galactosemia, the tests can be ordered to be done immediately. My guess is that the first results could, if desired, be back before the baby is taking more than small amounts of colostrum.
To answer this question more specifically, one could research the laboratory methods which will be used to diagnose this baby, and also find out which personnel will be involved, and get them prepared to prioritize this.
