Hi Donna,
That wonderful leader was promoted up and out of FCC, ...she was also very
involved with AWHONN, ...she really should speak at their conference
and/or write up an article about her experiences in building up comprehensive
lactation services, leading, empowering, and relying on an experienced and
skilled LC staff to make that happen.
Regarding competencies, looks like you got a good foot in the door - bravo!
... search and find, for example:

Where I worked, the hospital/system wide competencies, which took many
hours to complete, were eventually, thankfully, all online, except for all the
many hands-on skills, for example glucometer and breastpump. For all the
hands on skills there was a yearly 'competencies skills-fair'. The LC staff
manned the breastpump skills station.

Wow, Debbie, who is this awesome person??? Can we clone her??? Seriously,
though, I also have an issue with lack of support from management. We are a
small community hospital (approx 40 deliveries/month with a 10 bed Level 2
NICU). Lactation Support here has always been considered a "frill". This
past week our Male Supervisor presented our unit with a huge binder of
"Competencies" which we are all required to get signed off on over the next
months. You can guess what competency was missing: Breastfeeding, pumping, and
anything having to do with same.
So, of course, I requested to develop them and was told, rather
half-heartedly..."well, ok, just keep them brief".
If anyone is willing to share their Breastfeeding Competencies, please
email me privately.
