Ruth,

What I've often suggested to moms who are breastfeeding is to put a few
drops of tea tree oil in a cup and add boiling water, close their eyes (the
vapors are strong and can irritate the eyes), and inhale the steam. It only
takes a few minutes and can really clear congestion plus the tea tree oil
is antimicrobial. Do several times per day. I would think this inhalation
would be safe in pregnancy. Drinking lots of fluids, as suggested, can be
helpful, too.

A mother who is expecting to give birth soon is suffering severe congestion
and cough. She is concerned about whether taking a decongestant might
suppress colostrum production. What is known about this?
