Hi Christine and all,
I had one client many years ago who was allergic to wool and wool
products. She did immediately break into a rash that had large
welts. She did not wear wool or allow any wool in her home. It was
at a time when purified lanolin products were fairly new on the
market. The mother had been told by another health professional that
it was purified and would be okay. It wasn't. Her nipples and
areolas were a mess.
I contacted the then local distributor who is also an IBCLC and had
many years experience. She had never heard of the reaction and
didn't think that it could happen. She provided me with some
research which also suggested that it wouldn't happen.
The mother did recover and continue breastfeeding. I have never
heard of this happening since that time. I do ask mothers about any
allergies when taking their history. This has been the only mother
with a wool allergy that I know of who has had a reaction.
I do not have any other information from that case.
Kind regards,
Ruth Berkowitz, IBCLC, BFHI Educator & Assessor, ABA counsellor, trainer
