Hello Ladies,

I want to thank all of you for the reasonable and informative discussion on
tongue-tie. We need to share information, perspectives and strategies
without the flames!

I tend to hang in the middle of the road on the topic. Yes, we need to work
on good breastfeeding management. Mothers are definitely self-diagnosing
and having releases done with no breastfeeding management or follow-up.
They decline or avoid assistance in person so we don't know if the release
is/was necessary. This is frustrating but I can see a positive. Mothers
that weren't able to bf previous children are able to access services and
successfully bf now.

I am so thankful we know more about tongue-tie now. For years, I knew
something was going on with these little ones and there was no one to send
the bf dyads to for assistance. Doctors told mothers I didn't know what I
was talking about. The mothers that I was working with knew something was
wrong, could not get answers and commonly quit breastfeeding. It is so
refreshing to have knowledgeable MDs, NPs, SLPs and bodywork providers to
help these families. Unfortunately, there are some jumping on the bandwagon
and releasing LT and TT with little knowledge, experience or follow-up.
Some of the multiple releases result from incomplete initial treatment. I
am very careful about referrals but that doesn't always result in the
family getting to a skilled provider.

In our area, we have so many more options than we had just 2 years ago. We
are making a difference little by little. Is it perfect? Definitely not.
But we are learning and we make a difference one family at a time.
