I learned about this pediatrician after he sent an email to the ABM listserve. I was curious to find out if he had an "angle"...or was out for personal gain. It appears he is really another passionate advocate trying to help moms. He has a masters in public health, and spent his own money developing this FREE app for moms to be able to find breastfeeding help, peer support, places to breastfeed in public, etc. He works for a nonprofit LA hospital providing care to a low income hispanic population.

It is brand new, and will only be useful if information gets added to it. Anyone can put resources on the map; lactation consultants/doctors can put themselves on, moms can add breastfeeding knowledgable doctors they have found. Businesses will be put on the map who welcome breastfeeding, which will help to get that issue on their radar screen. Moms will know where to go for peer support.

It is not perfect, in the sense that noone official is "vetting" the resources. But the moms will. And I know the formula companies are getting their own apps out there.

Below I have pasted a portion of the email Dr Goldfinger sent. (Latch MD is just the name for his practice website supporting breastfeeding. LatchME is the app...currently avavilable just for iPhone, but coming for android)

Please consider visiting the website and putting all of the breastfeeding resources in your area on the map! I think this is a very exciting tool!

<<<For those who don't know, latchME is a new app that uses evidence-based, public health principles to categorize and map breastfeeding support for moms and professionals. No more should women feel isolated from not knowing where to turn for help. latchME crowd-sources and maps local resources so moms find what they need, when they need it, even on the go. (Soon they'll be able to find each other for peer support!) Professionals can also use latchME to find and stay connected to breastfeeding resources in your area, and attract potential breastfeeding patients. We all know it takes a sizable village to help families succeed with breastfeeding. Now the village has an app.
latchME already has resources signed up and mapped allover the US, in Canada, the UK, and even China! (See the growing map at LatchMD.com<http://LatchMD.com>) We have all US Baby-Friendly Hospitals, all HMBANA Milk Banks, and a rapidly expanding list of UK Hospitals, La Leche League sites, WIC sites, peer support groups, family-friendly businesses, and breastfeeding-friendly public places. Most importantly, many dedicated IBCLC's and physicians such as yourselves have graciously signed up to be listed and found by mommies on latchME. Far reaching local coalitions and mother-to-mother Facebook groups are also promoting the app. We're even looking for ways to engage physicians and professionals in the UK and other English-speaking countries--if you have any overseas contacts please let us know--so that latchME can serve mothers everywhere!
Best of all, latchME is free! There's no advertising--no formula, no diapers, no bottles, no anything! So it's 100% WHO Code of Marketing compliant. Share it with colleagues, and of course, share it with new mothers! Ask your local breastfeeding coalitions and taskforces to add resources in your area for moms<http://latchmd.com/Add4moms>, then do away with those not-so-green glossy flyers, printing costs, and website fees! You can even add a link to the latchME resource map<http://latchmd.com/map.php> onto your website. It's easy. :)
Together we can make this app incredibly resourceful for breastfeeding women at every stage and in every place. We will also develop innovative ways for latchME to enhance the professional-patient breastfeeding support experience!
 Sincerely,
 Jon
PS: As this grows latchME will be developed for Android and translated it into other languages, starting with Spanish. Please be patient with our small team.
PPS: If you note any errors in your resource listings on latchME, please let me know ASAP so we can get them corrected for you. Happy latching!
