Dear Lactnetters,

I am hoping someone can shed light on a subject which is concerning some colleagues and myself. I don't know the protocol in other countries but here in the U.S. each state requires hospitals to offer all newborns screening for metabolic diseases such as PKU. Part of the accuracy of the test depends on measuring blood levels after an infant has had 24 hours of a protein feeding. In most hospitals this test is done around 48 hours of infant's age. What we question is, given the under staffing and sometimes the competency of the staff in the ability to truly assess milk transfer, are we perhaps not getting accurate results?

Thank you,

M Westra RN, IBCLC
