I have been known to say "well, doctors have to know so much, sometimes they can't stay up to date on everything. This is when it is great to talk with an IBCLC. It is our profession and duty to keep up to date on breastfeeding."
It's recognizing the doc's vast knowledge, yet pointing out the IBCLC is the lactation expert in what I feel is a professional and polite way.
