Good to hear from you. I've just gone back on Lactnet after months "nomail".
It is good that advertising for their products has disappeared in Africa.
In Australia artificial milks for newborns and babies udner 12 months cannot
be directly advertised, but that doesn;'t stop the companies. To stay within
the letter of the MAIF Agreement, the companies advertise the totally
unnecessary toddler milks - in the same cans, same logo which, as Nina
Berry's research has shown, mothers perceive as ads for infant food. The ads
push the idea that only from their additives can kids get prebiotics and
probiotics, neglecting to state that there are far more in human milk and in
a fluid where they are in balance. I don't know how many parents switch from
breast to artificial substitutes with added prebiotics, because they don't
know that the real thing is so richly endowed with prebiotids, which
stimulate growth of probiotics in the bowel.
So, while artificial milks for babies under 12 months can't be advertised,
there is de facto advertising for them via the toddler ads.
