Pat,
Sounds as if this baby and mother have been through a lot and both super
stressed. Has baby had any bodywork? CST might help baby to work through
emotional trauma and waken muscles not used before frenotomy, and mother
could benefit from it, too. Rescue remedy for both, for baby a drop or two
applied to sole of foot, and mom could take it before attempting to nurse.
Walking while offering breast sometimes has helped babies I've worked with.
Cathy Genna's sensory issues technique of swinging baby in a blanket;
described in her book Supporting Sucking Skills...might also help.
I find dyads like this do best with support in a consult so mom can be
guided by a non stressed person. I've had success with baby in sling (if mom
doesn't own a sling, I've made one from one of those muslin swaddle
blankets) and I walk with mom behind her and hum and gently rub mom's back giving
her encouragement and a bit of calming to decrease her stress. I've also
had baby upright in sling, low enough to come from under mom's breast and
well secured which has worked. Of course skin-to-skin and baby on mom's
chest for napping so breast offered before baby totally awake. I wouldn't give
up on co-bathing and add rescue remedy drops to bath water; also, no
pressure to latch or feed, just apologies to baby and lots of sweet nothings
whispered.
Letting mom know it can happen, but may take time. Supplementing at
breast may provide baby with that immediate gratification and incentive to suck
more.
Good luck with this baby and mom and of course, they're in good hands.

PTP:Failed induction, C-sec for pre-eclampsia 38 wks 4 d. Baby sleepy,
would latch, never nursed more than few min, lost 11% body wt, began supp and
pumping, 34 days in hosp, mom readm 2 days later, baby with mom & dad, mom
on mag for 4 days, tried nsg, but baby didn't latch well or suck strongly,
TT discovered, after dischg had a clip @ 12 days for tt & lip tie. I first
saw her, re-attached @ about 18days & Dr suggested seeing someone with
laser. so she had laser done at 18 days. Baby began to refuse to suck,
angry after stretches. I suggested backing off, let her forget why mad, give
paced bottle feeding in BF position. (Mom was also sent back to ER twice
for increased B/P. on Procardia) Suggested co bathing at about 6 weeks,
1st x or 2 latched and sucked best ever, now refusing again even in bath.
Mom routinely has gotten 5-6 oz/day, now 10-12, all along abt 1/3 of what
baby takes per day. Was gaining rapidly and I had suggested getting too
much formula, so tried to back off and use paci-which she won't take, Mom
thinks baby has difficulty getting herself organized to suck. Now 7 wks old.
