Dear Lactnet Friends:

I don't think the restaurant employees that used the word "terrorist" were
implying that breastfeeding is viewed as a terrorist act.

People in authority will stoop to any means to keep power over a situation,
no matter if their way of doing so is senseless. The folks in the
restaurant were responding to the perceived resistance on the part of the
breastfeeding family, not to the act of breastfeeding.

I've encountered this sort of ridiculous aggression when I have questioned
those in authority. Example, when I was an LC in a hospital, I encountered
resistance from NICU staff about obtaining information on a baby. My
response was, "I am seeing this mother on the postpartum unit to help her
with breastfeeding. I would like to see her baby in NICU and look at the
chart to help her understand what is going on." The response of the staff
was to deny my request, on the grounds of 'confidentiality', even though I
was wearing a hospital issued ID badge.

warmly,
