Subject: Hi Palate query

Good day everyone

I have a mom who has had considerable trouble with cracked nipples and pain
with breastfeeding. I have examined baby for tongue-tie, tight lip frenulum
but this is not the issue. I have checked the latch and a private midwife
has checked the latch and we cannot see anything obviously wrong. The other
day at a consult I relooked at baby and noticed that baby has a very high
palate. I got baby to suck on my finger and definitely noticed that the
palate was high. The mom has been using nipple shields for feeds and
although these have helped a bit they have not provided complete relief. I
have also checked to rule out thrush or vasospasms but do not believe either
of these to be the problem. Does anyone have any technique that this mom can
use to help her baby feed more comfortably?

Thank you
Laura (IBCLC)
