Stephanie,
I thought I would write to this "researcher." Here is what I sent him:
Dear DM,
You are correct in claiming that a PhD is not the final answer to
producing good research. I have seen highly successful people who were
high school drop-outs. Self-determination and a tangible goal are key
ingredients to self-achievement. You obviously have a strong desire to
stand out. However, I would caution you against a few pitfalls in
research:
1. What is printed is not necessarily true, although it is very
tempting to use it to support one's hypothesis.
2. Always check the source of funding of the articles you quote. A
healthy questioning of the motives of the funding entity is in order
before agreeing with the results and conclusions of a paper
3. Informing your readership that you do not welcome a negative
response raises the red flag of insecurity. All researchers worth
their salt publish peer reviewed articles. Perhaps you should change
your wording and invite constructive criticism to improve your work.
4. Given your special interest in pollution, I am puzzled at the angle
of your article on breastfeeding. Your perspective is oriented toward
discrediting breastfeeding rather than attacking pollution that
destroys the infant food programmed by nature for thousands of years.
Given all the qualities that you so proudly detail at the bottom of
your article, I know you can do better. May I suggest that you reframe
your argument to questioning the effects of pollution on human
health ... and human milk?
Thank you in advance for your attention. Sincerely,
Nicole Bernshaw, MSc.
