Cindy says,
Jan - I was at the first exam in 1985, given at Georgetown University
before the La Leche League International Conference held in DC that year. I
didn't realize/remember it was also given in CA.

Maybe I'm misremembering since I didn't take the exam until 1987 in
Chicago. Perhaps it was given just in DC in 1985 and in San Diego in 1986. Those
things you think you will remember forever -- you don't. Sigh.
As to gadgets: Medela and Ameda were around then. We had gadgets -- not
as many as today, but we had pumps -- Medela's 015 and Ameda's "Grannie"
(gosh, I don't even remember the name of the big silver one that Medela's was
so similar to). We had the Lactaid. The SNS wasn't too far behind. I
made my own with my son (the reason I'm a lactation consultant) which was a
feeding tube I got from the hospital hooked to a syringe with rubber bands
around it pinned to my shirt. I then took the idea to Medela and asked them
to make what I called "the poor man's supplementer" -- and voila, out of
that came the starter SNS. I currently use a 36 in 5 Fr. feeding tube and a
30 ml syringe without the plunger if I want to use a feeding tube at the
breast, having given up on most gadgets entirely except for pumps. I have
less gadgets now than I did when I started in private practice.
