Sue,
I would think it could be mastitis or even an abscess. Or some sort of
Montgomery gland blockage or inflammation or infection. At first I was
thinking some sort of nerve impingement related to mom's position and not
the bf per se. But when you began to talk about the quarter-sized bump, I
began to think some inflammatory or infectious process would can be very
very painful. So I do indeed recommend an ultrasound, and perhaps a clean
catch culture of her milk and a skin culture at the site. Or does she EVER
see any discharge or drainage from that site, even a little?
