Doucet S, Soussignan R, Sagot P, Schaal B. An overlooked aspect of the human breast: areolar glands in relation with breastfeeding pattern, neonatal weight gain, and the dynamics of lactation. Early Human Development 2012;88(2):119-28.
This research proposes that the natural secretions of Montomery glands are important for babies' breastfeeding efficacy. Personally, I take an anthropological view, that neither babies nor mothers' breasts should be washed with soap. In China and Korea women traditionally do not bath for a month after childbirth. Perhaps a step too far for many of us in the West, but an interesting cultural practice.
