Basic Function
The Executive Director serves as Chief Operating Officer of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. The Executive Director is the primary liaison with the Board of Directors, Medical Board, Committee Chairs and membership of the organization. The ED will also be the face of HMBANA to other national and international NGOs, US and Canadian government agencies and legislators. He/she is responsible for implementation of a new infrastructure of the organization. As director of a professional membership organization, the ED will develop committees of North American stakeholders interested in furthering the development, infrastructure and visibility of HMBANA through work on improving governance, finances, grant writing, advocacy, policies for practice and accreditation and developing capacity. The Executive Director participates in development and implementation of new administrative policies set forth by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director is responsible to the needs of the HMBANA membership.
Accountability
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors. The ED coordinates with the Medical Board, Headquarters Administrator and representatives of the Milk Banks to ensure that the membership organization increases capacity according to the needs of the member milk banks. The Executive Director’s performance will be evaluated annually by the Board.
The Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA; HBMANA.org) , established in 1985, is the professional organization of non profit human milk banks in the US and Canada, and has been a strictly volunteer organization, run by directors of member milk banks. The number of milk banks and the demand for safe, pasteurized donor are both increasing and HMBANA is internationally recognized as the expert in safe processing of donor human milk and in milk expression and storage.
HMBANA seeks an executive director to further our internal growth and presence in medical, government, new parent and general communities.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
Administrative Internal Responsibilities:
1. Improves revenue, identifies sources of funding, raises funds, in cooperation with the Fundraising Committee to support existing operations and its expansion and promote the goals of the organization.
2. Hires, supervises, trains, and recruits staff by defining duties, establishing performance standards and conducting performance reviews as needed.
3. Provides liaison and staff support to committee chairs and committees to enable them to perform their functions successfully
4. Administers funds, physical assets and/or property in line with the goals of the organization.
5. Manages the HMBANA Developing milk bank mentoring program
6. Manages the transition of HMBANA Accreditation Program to an independent organization
7. Manages HMBANA educational publications, conferences and webinars.
8. Manages the collection of statistical data of HMBANA membership and the utilization of the data for HMBANA’s benefit
9. Develops and manages group service contracts for HMBANA member milk banks such as insurance, bottles, medical supplies, equipment
10. Cultivates and strengthens communications, from website impact to external relations.
Interfacing outside HMBANA
Build and enhance partnerships with other organizations, associations, agencies, governmental bodies and others to promote HMBANA’s cause and promote its mission:
1. Similar organizations in other areas (i.e. blood banking).
2. Other breastfeeding organizations (i.e. LLL, USBC, …)
3. Government agencies (i.e. CDC, FDA, Surgeon General).
4. International breastfeeding and milk banking organizations.
5. Remains current on state, provincial and federal US and Canadian legislation and regulations that impact human milk banking
Qualities/Qualifications
BA required, Masters level education preferred.
Experience with and desire to work with a small growing organization in a transitional period.
Demonstrated ability of having developed and led an organization to the next stage of its growth and development.
Excellence in organizational management.
Experience in successful grant writing and fundraising.
Strong written, verbal and personal communication skills.
Experience in public speaking to professional audiences and the media.
