Oh, Nikki...
Unfortunately, while doctors do need lawyers and lawyers do need
doctors, the youth in either profession is groomed in such a strange and
scary way, that sometimes all what we have is to... I am really lost in
what we can do here :(
in 2002, when the malpractice crisis pushed OB's (along with
neuro-surgeons and other high risk professionals) out of NJ, we (NJ
docs) went on strike and marched on to Trenton (state capital). The
banners read (in different variations) - "if you are in labor, call
1800-lawyer" and the speakers would start with the words 'I am a lawyer,
but I am physician-friendly"....
As I said, my son is a lawyer, and his very-very first lecture on the
the very-very first day of the freshmen year was on... ethics? Nope.
constitutional law? NO!!! It was medical malpractice! That was tough for
a kid, who grew up in a medical household, with his MD mother, MD+DO
step-father and MD grandmother. And when 3 years later he invited us for
the oath ceremony for all newly minted NJ attorneys - what the top brass
of NJ judicial system was talking? what was the only other profession
mentioned by name? You would never guess... One of the speakers said,
that lawyers are facing hard ethical dilemmas every day, which makes the
legal profession do hard. Doctors, on the other hand (the guy said
absolutely seriously) have it much easier, as from the day one they have
to just follow "do not harm" rule and that's it! No ethical problems
whatsoever>:o !
Sadly, there is still not too much peace under the olive trees here :(

Fortunately (at least I do believe so) THAT is absolutely doable - we
can and should teach medical students and residents how to promote such
love.
