Dear All,
Recently there was a thread on Lactnet when someone asked for evidence about the quality of human milk after the first year, i.e. into the second year and beyond. That is, the nutritive and immunological quality. I knew I'd seen something useful, and now I've found it. The purpose of the article, in the August issue of the Journal of Human Lactation, was to show human milk banking personnel that there was no need for an age restriction on donors. In the process, the authors provide a very useful resource on the quality of milk a year or more postpartum. The table on the second page of the article is particularly useful, as are the references for this table and for the article.
Perrin MT, Fogleman A, Allen JC. The nutritive and immunoprotective quality of human milk beyond 1 year postpartum: are lactation-duration-based exclusions justified? J Hum Lact 2013; 29(3): 341-349.
I commend the article to those of you who need a reference to cite as regards the quality of human milk in the second year and beyond. Do search the article's references, too.
